thurs-DIY: burlap runners

i've received several questions this morning regarding the burlap runners that i used for the stockings on design*sponge. i made them too!

i didn't do DIYs for most of the projects for our wedding - because i wanted the big day to be a big surprise. but shame on me for not documenting my work so that i could post it afterward.

i created the monogram in illustrator - and then printed it out onto transparency paper. then i used a hole punch & exacto knife to carefully cut out the monogram - leaving the remaining transparency paper as my stencil. (it was completely a coincidence that the dotted circle around my monogram was the exact same size as a standard hole punch.)

then using a dome brush ... i used a stenciling method called stippling, which is tapping or dabbing the loaded brush against the stencil openings. the trick to stenciling is a dry brush! so after adding new paint to the brush, i would tap the loaded brush on a paper plate to remove some of the excess.

the important part for me was placement. i wanted the burlap to look like the fabric from an old press. i changed the location of the stencil width-wise for each runner but kept them aligned & exactly 4' apart length-wise. this is best explained through a little sketch.

comment if you have any other questions!!! :) i would love to help out.

i would purchase one of those runners in a heartbeat. Where do you find your burlap? I did some burlap bows for Christmas with some that a lady at Jewelweed (a store on the Gallatin square that i'm now obsessed with) but i don't know a good place to find it. Ideas?

hi lovely. i needed a LOT of burlap - so i went to joann's. also they have great coupons. i'll definitely have to check out jewelweed the next time i'm in gallatin. :)

What kind of paint did you use for the burlap? Fabric paint or something else?

@guy ... i used acrylic paint that i picked up at michaels. i suppose if i planned to make a burlap runner for my kitchen table - i would use fabric paint. but the acrylic paint worked wonderfully!

Hello!

Gorgeous! Did the joann's burlap have a smell (ie gasoline, oil?)

Thanks!

i don't remember a smell. i do however remember sneezing a lot - oh allergies. i have some at home - i can give it the sniff test tonight! :)
