african-themed food labels

tonight i'm throwing a little get together w/ a group of girls to celebrate our big trip next week. we're going to eat yummy african appetizers (don't worry - i'll share soon!), watch either ghost in the darkness or nowhere in africa AND we'll make bracelets for the kids.

my mom warned me to not get to OCD in my party planning - but who is she kidding!?! in another life - i'd like to be an event planner. :)

as a little preview - here are some quick african-themed food labels i designed:

supplies:

this printable

this font (bebas via font squirrel)

someone w/ adobe illustrator

6" kabob skewers

something to sturdy your skewers (ie. gumdrops, cork or clay)

instructions:

1 // modify ... in illustrator, open the file and modify the labels to fit your menu! choose your colors. red, black, yellow and green are often associated w/ africa. but i went neon & PINK instead of red! girls' night and all!

2 // print ... i used hp premium photo paper in gloss for that extra finished look.

3 // cut ... you can either use the guides to cut out 2.5"x3" squares or carefully cut a border around the edges.

4 // tape or glue ... to the back of your skewer.

5 // add your something sturdy so that they stand (or press them directly into your item).

easy peasy! :)

a little update: i was having trouble getting these to stay up w/ just corks. a little super glue and a nickel did the trick. is that illegal?!?

april showers: the games

i'm not a big shower gamer. i basically failed the "how well do you know wade" trivia game during my own shower. in front of all my aunts and female cousins and family friends, my worst fear was confirmed ... i didn't even know the man i was about to commit my entire life to! i mean - it's extremely important to know his shoe size and favorite super hero, right!?!

so when i was asked as part of my "to do list" for the shower last weekend to come up w/ activities ... i was anti putting angela on the spot in front of my brother's family and friends. 

game 1 // i found a great "he says she says" game through pinterest. (see the original here on made sweet.) i interviewed ross and angela ahead of time w/ simple questions like "what did you think of him/her when you first met" and "what's your favorite thing to do together". and then i quized the shower guests instead! to add a personalized touch - i created silhouettes of the bride and groom in illustrator. (serious blackmail possibilities in the future w/ the cellphone profile pictures i created these from!)

 

game 2 // as initiation into the "old wives club" i decided to quiz angela and the rest of the shower attendees on their "old wives tales" knowledge. there are so many funny old wives tales out there ... and it was even more fun to hear what the guests came up w/ even if their answers weren't exactly correct. for example: gain a child lose a ______.  no not "social life" ... and thankfully not "sex life!" either. the tale is actually "gain a child lose a tooth!" and apparently this one has some truth to it - see here.

and of course, what fun is a party game w/o a prize! we found these adorable mini galvanized watering cans (in the dollar bins) at target. add a pair of bright green gardening gloves and a dahlia - and you have the perfect spring shower prize!!!

my week: 3 random things

1 // we're still running a whole lot. today a group met @ the donut den in town. the plan: run an easy 3m & then eat donuts! well all except me. :( the ONLY thing i really miss since going gfree is definitely donuts. so this weekend, i'm determined to make my own! lots and lots of inspiration online:

i'm pretty determined to create my own little recipe - including all my favorite gfree flours: sweet rice, tapioca and of course oat flour. will share!

2 // confession: i've fallen behind on the "31 days to a better photo" challenge. i promise to catch up over the weekend. then we'll link up again on monday! want to know what's been wasting my time? my new iphone. totally addicted to the nerdiest app ever - the ancestry.com app.

seriously though! so far i've found out that my great great great grandpa francis m. hardway had 8 sisters and 7 brothers ... oh and possibly an illegitimate daughter. oh and my great great great great great grandpa jurge hartweg was born in germany. he changed the name to hardway upon settling in virginia. yup i'm totally addicted!

3 // i went ahead and made a printable 8x10 of my grandpa's saying. i printed a copy for myself yesterday and will definitely share as soon as i find the perfect place for it in the apartment. in the meantime, enjoy (family!):
